Dr. Darren M. Morton has proudly served as Comptroller for the City of Mount Vernon since 2022, bringing decades of executive leadership, financial management, and community advocacy. A lifelong Mount Vernon resident, he holds a B.A. in Business Administration from Hofstra University, an M.S. from St. John’s University, and a Doctorate in Executive Leadership from St. John Fisher College. He also completed the Harvard Graduate School of Education’s Management Development Program, sharpening his expertise in fiscal oversight and organizational leadership.
Dr. Morton is “Making It Happen: Accountability, Transparency, and Stability for Mount Vernon.” Under his leadership, the Comptroller’s Office restored public trust, modernized tax and accounting systems, improved financial accountability, completed four annual audits, and issued twelve quarterly reports. He retired longstanding vendor liabilities, formed new partnerships with local and state finance professionals, and secured $1 million to leverage city assets for economic development.
A versatile public servant, Dr. Morton’s impact spans four mayoral administrations, where he served as Commissioner of Recreation, Commissioner of Planning and Community Development, and Chief of Staff. He is also the founder of two non-profits and a board member of the NYS Society of Municipal Finance Officers, continuing his commitment to Mount Vernon’s progress and prosperity.

Restructure PILOT Agreements & Financial Assistance Programs Revise agreements and other financial incentive programs to ensure they provide fair returns to the City while supporting sustainable development and community investment.
